Case Study

Challenge Build function, storage, and personality into the tiny kitchen of this vintage Queen Anne home.

Solution Design and strategically install custom painted cabinets, recycled fir countertops, copper plumbing fixtures, and a farmhouse sink to maximize the available space. Move the microwave off the counter to an inset shelf.

Introduce a freestanding cabinet, purchased at a local architectural salvage yard, to house most of the pantry items.

Result The redesigned room, with its rich woods and warm colors, is vastly more user friendly and ties in beautifully with the vintage of the home. We significantly increased the counter space while ensuring an unobstructed work triangle connecting refrigerator, range, and sink.

Almost everything is now within arm’s reach, thanks to the refinished, freestanding pantry cabinet. Placing “unfitted” furniture like this in a kitchen evokes the feeling of a home, as opposed to a laboratory.
